Rast and McLaren part ways after 2023 season
16th August 2023McLaren and their Formula E driver, René Rast will not be together for the upcoming 10th season which is set to get back underway in January, next year.
On Tuesday, the McLaren Formula E team officially announced that Rast will not be part of their 2024 driver line-up for the upcoming 10th season of the all-electric single-seater series.
This season was McLaren’s introduction to the sport with their NEOM partnership as Jake Hughes and Rast drove the team through the first season of the Gen3 era.
Rast was the first driver to be snatched up by McLaren, ahead of Hughes’ appointment, at the end of season eight which Mercedes-EQ’s Stoffel Vandoorne won.
In a statement, the team said:
“Rene has been an integral part of the team’s successes and learnings as its first season as the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team.
“Rene has taken the difficult decision to pursue other opportunities, and the team fully supports his decision. We can’t thank him enough for everything he’s done for the team over the past year.”
“Thank you again, René – you will be missed.”
In response to the announcement, Rast commented on Instagram on McLaren’s official Formula E post. He said:
“Thanks everyone, it’s been an incredible journey.”
There is no confirmation on who will replace the German driver ahead of the 2023/24 Formula E season but the team states this will be done in ‘due course.’ McLaren continued:
“The team has been working in the background to secure the best possible driver line-up for Season 10, and we are excited to announce the full driver line-up for the 2023/24 season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in due course.”
Rast returned to Formula E this season after he completed a full-time stint with Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler back in season seven. This came after he took part in the six races over nine days, with the German team, to conclude Season 6 amid the beginnings of the Coronavirus pandemic.
With McLaren, the German driver scored the team’s only podium of the season in Diriyah and completed the season in 13th, eight points adrift of teammate Hughes in the sister car.
