How Formula E fared in Monaco: Cassidy wins to lead championship

Envision Racing’s Nick Cassidy secured the race win in the Principality of Monaco, from ninth on the grid, to take the lead in the current Formula E championship standings.

How the race unfolded in Monaco…

It was a fantastic getaway from McLaren’s pole sitter, Jake Hughes who led into Saint Devote ahead of the Nissan duo of Sacha Fenestraz and Norman Nato. After the first lap, the pack filtered through the streets of Monaco without issue.

Mahindra’s Oliver Rowland went on a charge through the field, after a 13th-place start on the grid, as he jumped Envision’s Nick Cassidy and Avalanche Andretti’s Jake Dennis at the famous hairpin. By the end of the second lap, Rowland found himself in sixth.

At the beginning of lap three, Avalanche Andretti’s Andre Lotterer was the first driver to retire from the race. As the German pulled his Andretti Gen3 to the side of the circuit, and through an access gate, the yellow flags were briefly waved. Replays showed Lotterer side-by-side with McLaren’s Rene Rast into the final corner, and contact was eventually made which rotated the German around and out of the race.

On lap five, Cassidy took a move from Rowland before him and made a move into the hairpin – around the outside – to snatch sixth place away from Jaguar’s Mitch Evans. By lap seven, Cassidy found himself in the race lead as the drivers started to activate their first rounds of attack mode.

Despite a fall down the order, Cassidy fought his way back through the order to regain the race lead by lap 11 as both Evans and Dennis activated their attack modes.

By lap 16, Evans snatched the lead away from Cassidy down into Saint Devote while slightly further back, Dennis found himself just one second behind the pair. However, it wasn’t long before Cassidy returned to the lead two laps later after a move down the main straight.

The race was neutralised as the safety car was deployed out onto the track after Maserati’s Maximillian Gunter retired at the top of Beau Rivage (turn two) and stopped ahead of Massenet (turn three). The Maserati attempted to overtake NIO 333’s Dan Ticktum whose front wing was hanging on following contact with Nato earlier on in the race.

At the end of lap 24, the Porsche safety car peeled back into the pit lane to allow Cassidy to take the pack to green flag conditions. Despite the restart, and without any additional laps due to the safety car, Cassidy was able to hold off the advances of his fellow countryman to take the win in Monaco.

Cassidy’s victory was also aided by a last-lap safety car which meant the New Zealander could walk to the chequered flag. This came after Jaguar’s Sam Bird made contact with ABT’s Nico Muller into turn one in the final couple of laps.

Podium:

  1. Nick Cassidy, Envision
  2. Mitch Evans, Jaguar TCS
  3. Jake Dennis, Avalanche Andretti
