German climate change group take responsibility for Formula E protest
24th April 2023German climate change group, Letzte Generation, took responsibility for protesting the second Formula E race in Berlin on Sunday.
Formula E returned last weekend for their second double-header in Berlin, Germany, at the Tempelhof Airport Street Circuit for rounds seven and eight of the sports 16-race calendar.
The second race of the weekend was temporarily halted as protesters climbed over the fencing and onto the track during the starting procedure. This occurred as the drivers completed their burnouts to move from the ‘dummy grid’ to the starting grid.
After protesters sat on the circuit, the event security was quickly on scene and removed the protesters from the track – later detained by the police.
The race later went on without any further issues which saw Envision Racing’s Nick Cassidy secure his first race win of the season, ahead of both Jake Dennis (Avalanche Andretti) and Jean-Eric Vergne (DS Penske).
The German climate group, Letzte Generation (Last Generation), claimed responsibility for the delayed start to the race. The group were calling for their government to take action against climate change as they posted on Twitter.
Translated, the tweet stated:
“++ Car racing disrupted ++
“We are at the @eFORMELde racetrack to sound the alarm.
“It’s time to slow down. Because we’re on the highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator.”
This protest marks the second time a high-profile single-seater series has been targeted by climate change groups in the last 12 months.
However, following the protest, fans were left confused as to why protesters were protesting against Formula E – an all-electric series.
