Cape Town E-Prix: Mahindra and ABT Cupra withdraw due to safety concerns worries
25th February 2023Mahindra Racing and ABT Cupra have withdrawn from Formula E’s Cape Town E-Prix due to safety concerns with the rear suspension of their car.
Mahindra decided to pull out of the Cape Town E-Prix during the event’s qualifying session, alongside their customer team: ABT Cupra.
As a result of their decision, the Indian manufacturer kept all four drivers in their garages during qualifying with both Mahindra drivers: Oliver Rowland and Lucas di Grassi, as well as the ABT Cupra pilots: Nico Muller and Kevin Van Der Linde.
The team is expected to complete an examination when the parts arrive back in the UK to determine the cause of the issue.
In a statement, Mahindra Racing said:
“Mahindra Racing Formula E team have confirmed their withdrawal from the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship qualifying sessions and race in Cape Town due to rear suspension safety concerns.
“A thorough investigation on the suspension elements of the Mahindra M9Electro race cars will take place on the team’s return to the UK. This decision also affects their customer team @abtmotorsport.
“The safety of our drivers and extended teams is of utmost importance.”
This means only a maximum of 18 drivers will take to the grid in the inaugural race in Cape Town. ABT’s withdrawal will also be a bitter pill to swallow for Van Der Linde who was gearing up for his home race.
