WRC’s Central Europe Rally looks to be an interesting concept

The World Rally Championship will test out a new innovation next season, which will see a rally consist of three different countries in one weekend: the Central Europe Rally.

The WRC will embark on its three-country rally event, in 2023, after the European countries of: Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria, rallied together to form the Central Europe Rally.

While the smooth roads may not be as threatening as loose dust and gravel, as a tarmac event, the new rally will provide a fresh challenge for the teams.

It is planned to be based at the German city of Passau, in the south-east district of Germany, which lies on the border of Austria and a stones-throw away from the Czech Republic border. As such the German city will be the beating heart of the Central Europe Rally with its service park being based at the Passau-Kohlbruck exhibition center.

The rally is set to start in Prague – Czech Republic’s largest, and capital, city – followed by a healthy mix of challenging special stages in Czechia, Austria and Lower Bavaria before it comes to an end in Passau.

Central Europe Rally is set to be an interesting event as it steps away from the norm. In usual fashion, the drivers race around one individual country for the weekend. Sliding and blasting their way through woodland, rural and urban areas, battling it out for top honours.

While it is unlikely that we will see border crossing segments – forcing the drivers and co-drivers getting their passport checked – it still remains an interesting concept.

Teams and spectators, at home or on the roadside, will see a range of different picturesque views instead of being stuck a single backdrop, like the Cherry Blossom tress in Japan or the Snowy hills of Monte-Carlo.

The decision to create a three-country rally opens the door to other opportunities – if it performs well – with the potential to copy the format into different territories.

Such examples could be a United Kingdom rally that consists of special stages in Wales, England and Scotland or a Nordic rally which features Finland, Sweden and Norway.

Ultimately, the innovation could raise the bar for WRC’s standards and increasing its appeal to future sponsors, manufacturers and countries and/or territories.

That’s all for the article; WRC’s Central Europe Rally looks to be an interesting concept! What do you think of the three-country rally? Let us know in the comments!
