WRC Rally Japan: Sordo’s blazing car brings SS2 to a stop
10th November 2022Hyundai’s Dani Sordo brought SS2 to an abrupt stop as his car burst into flames, mid-way through Friday’s opening stage.
Sordo’s Rally Japan weekend came to a fiery end on the opening stage of Friday morning as his car went up in flames during SS2, Isegamis Tunnel 1.
The Spaniard tried to extinguish the blaze with his on-board fire extinguisher but the canister did little to put the fire out. M-Sport Ford’s Gus Greensmith quickly drove in behind the burning car and lent his extinguisher to the Hyundai pairing of Sordo and Candido Carrera, his co-driver, in a bid to eradicate the blaze.
However, with both canisters were not enough to put the fire out.
Fortunately, everyone involved were okay. The Hyundai pairing established a safe distance between themselves and their burning wreck while Greensmith reversed his Ford Puma out of danger.
As a result, the stage was red flagged.
Only six drivers managed to complete SS2 before the session came to a premature end.
The newly-crowned champion, and Toyota driver, Kalle Rovanpera led the group with an impressive time of 19:52.2, 1.5 seconds quicker than Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville and Elfyn Evans (Toyota) who were P2 and P3 respectively.
Following the fire of Sordo’s car, SS3 has been cancelled and the crews are expected to head to SS4 – Shitara Town, which is set to take place at 8:58am (local time).
