Chadwick secures third title as W Series ends 2022 season early
11th October 2022Jenner Racing’s Jamie Chadwick has secured her third world title in the female-only formula category, W Series, as the sport ends its 2022 season early to focus on fundraising.
Trouble started to swirl around the single-seater category at Singapore’s Marina Bay Circuit, on September 30 – October 2, as the sport supported the 2022 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix.
This was down to the lack of funding required from the sports – recent – contracted investment which hadn’t been received.
In turn, this put the remaining three races of the season into jeopardy.
On Monday, the sport confirmed that they will cancel the 2022 season to focus on fundraising. W Series reportedly hopes this will improve the sport’s ‘longevity and financial health.’
W Series’ Chief Executive Officer, Catherine Bond Muir said:
“It’s with both great sadness and frustration that we announce that our much-anticipated final three races of the 2022 season in Austin and Mexico City will not go ahead.
“As a start-up in only our third season of racing, we are always working hard to ensure regularity of funding as we continue to grow our business, but due to recent unforeseen circumstances outside of W Series’ control, we had not been in receipt of contracted funds due to us.
“Therefore, we have been forced to make the unfortunate decision not to complete our scheduled calendar this season.
“We would like to thank both Circuit of The Americas and Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez’s Grupo CIE for their support as promoters of our events in Austin and Mexico City respectively, and apologise to both them and our fans that we will not be able to go racing there this year.”
As a result, Chadwick has now secured her third world title, increasing her legend in the sport. The British, three-time, world champion sat 50 points at the top of the drivers standings above Sirin Racing’s Beitske Visser and Click2Drive Bristol Street Motors Racing’s Alice Powell – who were P2 and P3 respectively, in the standings.
In addition, this means Jenner Racing has won the teams championship with 144 points to their name – in their rookie season.
The team, founded by Caitlyn Jenner, topped the teams standings with a 21-point lead over second-placed Click2Drive Bristol Street Motors Racing and Quantfury W Series Team, who were second and third on the table respectively.
Chadwick has been a dominant figure of the sport after she secured all three world championships, since W Series started, which included 11 wins, 10 pole positions and 18 podium finishes.
The Britons dominant presence could – potentially – lead her to greener pastures in the United States.
Last month, Chadwick was reported to test an Indy Lights car which was set to be prepared by Andretti Autosport, at the Sebring International Raceway.
As W Series wrapped up their statement, the sport has given an indication that Chadwick will move away from the female-only category to continue and develop her career in motorsports, they said:
“[Chadwick’s career] has shown her to be the class of the field since the debut of the series in 2019, and the perfect springboard to the next step in her motorsport career, to be announced in due course.”
