W Series British GP: Jamie Chadwick takes home pole position
1st July 2022Jenner Racing’s Jamie Chadwick traded lap times with PUMA’s Emma Kimilaninen in intense fashion before the two-time world champion secured pole position on home ground.
How qualifying unfolded…
In a usual manner to Formula 1’s support series’, once the pit exit light went green, there are was a queue to head out onto the Silverstone track. After the first set of benchmark laps, Jenner Racing’s Jamie Chadwick briefly topped the timing board before PUMA’s Tereza Babickova topped the timing board ahead of Emma Kimilaninen.
However, it wasn’t long before Britain’s very own Chadwick returned to P1 with a lap time of 1:57.812. At the other end of the table, Sirin Racing’s Emely De Heus was P17, 7.3 seconds off the pace of Chadwick.
After the first set of runs, Chadwick remained on provisional pole position ahead of Babickova and Kimilaninen who were P2 and P3 respectively.
In the second half, as the field commenced on their second set of qualifying laps, Jessica Hawkings dethroned Chadwick from the top spot Alice Powell. However, she was briefly toppled by her teammte Alice Powell. But, Powell soon had her lap time deleted as the British driver crossed track limits on the exit of turn nine (Copse).
In the last 10 minutes, Chadwick and Kimilaninen started to leap-frog each other for a higher grid slot as they traded lap times.
Chadwick returned to provisional pole position with a 1:57.051. But, the two-time W Series champion was toppled from pole position by Kimilaninen who went 0.022 seconds faster (1:57.029).
Kimilaninen soon extended difference between herself and Chadwick by five-hundredths of a second after she secured a lap time of 1:56.977.
With two minutes to spare, Chadwick returned to the top spot with a 1:56.758 which put the British world champion 0.219 seconds clear of her qualifying rival, Kimilaninen. However, the Finnish driver was not able to topple Chadwick from pole position in her last attempt.
