Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon equaled the second highest amount of wins in IndyCar, last weekend, after he secured his 53rd race win, tying him up with Mario Andretti.

Dixon secured his 53rd career victory in Indycar last weekend, in Nashville, Tennessee, which placed him second in the all-time record for race wins, alongside Andretti.

At the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix, Dixon started the race 14th behind Meyer Shank Racing’s Simon Pagenaud, in 13th. By lap 29, the race win looked to be out of his reach as the New Zealander found himself last after he took a penalty, for taking an emergency pit stop in a closed pit lane.

Despite being last, eight cautions helped the Ganassi driver remain in reach of the pack. A late red flag was brought out with only a handful of laps left to go, caused by Andretti Autosport’s Romain Grosjean – who crashed out of the race.

With a sprint to the finish, Dixon managed to hold off Scott McLaughlin’s advances on the restart. The two drivers crossed the line with just over a tenth of a second separating the two drivers. The intense finish became the closest margin for victory this season.

In a press release, Dixon said:

“Kudos to the team, we had a big crash there that took half the floor off the car.

“We had to take four turns of front wing out, so we had no grip.

“Nashville is so awesome.”

The win has now brought Dixon within six points of Team Penske’s championship leader, Will Power, with only two races remaining in Portland and Laguna Seca.
