Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden has been cleared to race in this weekend’s Gallagher Grand Prix, after the American driver collapsed in last weekend’s Hy-Vee Salute to Farmers 300.

Indycar followed protocol this week and following medical examination have cleared him to take part in the Gallagher GP practice session.

In a statement, Indycar said:

“The examination determined that Newgarden is cleared to participate in tomorrow’s [Friday’s]  NTT INDYCAR SERIES practice session on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.”

While the American driver has been cleared to practice at Indianapolis, he will have to undergo another evaluation to clear him to race.

The American crashed out of the lead in Iowa, last weekend, at the Hy-Vee Salute to Farmers 300 after the suspension of his car broke which caused him to slam into the barrier. A hit which registered more than 80 G’s of force.

The Nashville driver was cleared from the Iowa Speedway medical centre but he collapsed in the motorhome lot soon after. He was quickly airlifted to Des Moines hospital after he hit his head on the pavement and opened a wound.

He was held in hospital overnight as a precaution.

The Nashville born driver secured a race win, in Iowa, last Saturday and looked to complete the weekend with both wins under his belt. had he won the 300-lap race, Newgarden would’ve moved ahead of Chip Ganassi’s Marcus Ericsson as the championship leader.

However, the crashed dropped Newgarden to third and the Nashville driver is tied third with Chip Ganassi’s Scott Dixon in the standings, with five races left.

That’s it for the article: Josef Newgarden cleared to practice in Indycar! What do you think, should Newgarden race this weekend? Let us know in the comments!
