Formula E New York City E-Prix Preview
15th July 2022Formula E heads to New York City as the sport finishes 75% of its 2022 campaign, with ROKIT Venturi Racing and their driver, Edoardo Mortara, at the helm of both championships.
It’s a double header weekend, this week, in The Big Apple as the Formula E embarks on its 11th and 12th round of the season.
The stage is set at the Brooklyn Street Circuit in the Red Hook District, this also offers fans with a fantastic backdrop of the Manhattan Skyline and Statue of Liberty.
Each race will be held one day apart with round 11 being conducted on Saturday July 16, and round 12 on Sunday July 17, at 6pm (BST) and 6:20pm (BST) respectively.
Mortara’s championship to lose?
ROKiT Venturi Racing’s leading man is an incredible position as the sport drives towards its final quarter. After four podium finishes in four races, the Swiss driver leads the drivers championship with 139 points to his name, 11 points more than his closes rival: DS Techeetah’s Jean-Eric Vergne.
This came after the ROKiT Venturi driver secured victory in Marrakesh which provided the new championship leader enough points to climb over both Vergne and Mercedes-EQ’s Stoffel Vandoorne.
Vandoorne struggled to extend his championship lead last time out but a brake glitch in qualifying sent him down the field. However, he still managed to pull off a points finish with a recovery drive to eighth place.
With six races left to go, and the ever-mounting pressure of the title on Mortara’s shoulders, will the ROKiT Venturi driver buckle under the pressure?
The teams have it all to play for
While the drivers standings is heating up, in the run up to their on-track battles in NYC, the same can be said about the teams championship.
ROKiT Venturi lead the standings on 205 points but this is only a marginal gap as Techeetah are clamping down on their heels. Only two points separate ROKiT Venturi from Techeetah, in second-place. While third-placed Mercedes sit just underneath the 200-point mark with 198 points to their name.
Mercedes looked to be in promising form to secure their second-consecutive championship title. However, a 57 and 66 points haul for both ROKiT Venturi and Techeetah, in the last two races, respectively has turned up the heat in the team standings.
Alexander Sims’ departure
In an interview last week, with The Race, Mahindra Racing’s Alexander Sims announced that he will be leaving the Formula E championship at the end of the season.
The Briton made his debut in the sport back in the 2018 Ad Diriyah E-Prix. During his time in the sport, he has won once, secured two pole positions and finished on the podium three times.
However, it hasn’t been a good season for the Brit as he currently sits 18th in the standings, out of 22 drivers, with two points to his name.
Regardless, he will be looking for a great weekend in the Big Apple ahead of another double header in his home race when the sport heads to the United Kingdom for the London E-Prix, on July 30 and July 31.
