McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo has pushed back the latest set of rumours regarding his career as he states he is ‘committed to McLaren’ and will not be ‘walking away’ from Formula 1.

On Wednesday, July 13, 2022, the eight-time race winner, Ricciardo released a statement on Twitter which referred his determination to get back onto top form.

This comes after rumours have circulated around his future in the sport.

In the statement, Ricciardo said:

“There have been a lot of rumors around my future in Formula 1, but I want you to hear it from me.

“I am committed to McLaren until the end of next year and am not walking away from the sport.

“Appreciate it hasn’t been easy, but who wants easy! I’m working my ass off with the team to make improvements and get the car right and back to the front where it belongs.

“I still want this more than ever. See you in Le Castellet.”

Rumours have speculated the Australian to be on his way out of McLaren with Indycar racer Colton Herta, Williams’ Alexander Albon or Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel in contention for the seat.

While Ricciardo’s first set of points came in Australia, as it was for his teammate Lando Norris, the Aussie driver still sits 12th in the drivers standings with 17 points to his name.

This places the Perth-born driver 47 points adrift of his younger teammate, who is seventh in the standings on 64 points.

Since he joined McLaren, for the 2021 season, Riccardo has been comfortably beaten by his young British teammate in both his qualifying and race performances.

According to the number crushers at StatsF1.com, Riccardo has only qualified higher than Norris 10 times and finished higher than the Briton 11 times.

On the other side of the garage, Norris has qualified higher 23 times and finished the race higher 22 times.

McLaren Racing CEO, Zak Brown has even publicly criticised his driver on Sky Sport’s Any Driven Monday.

Brown said:

“Short of [his win at] Monza and a few races, it’s generally not met his or our expectations, as far as what we were expecting.”

For the time being, Ricciardo remains in contract until the end of 2023 of which he could opt to extend his contract or freely move to a different team for the 2024 season.
