Tag Heuer Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein secured the Julius Baer Pole Position ahead of the Formula E Mexico City E-Prix as ROKiT Venturi’s Edoardo Mortara slid across the line!
Group A
Sergio Sette Camara, Dragon Penske Autosport, was the first driver to venture out onto the track as the circuit went under green flag conditions, while the remaining drivers trickled out of the garage. Naturally the Brazilian was the first driver to set a lapped time with 1:08.595.
However, it wasn’t long until the fight started for the top spot. Mercedes-EQ’s Stoffel Vandoorne topped the timing board before DS Techeetah’s Jean Eric Vergne overtook the Mercedes time. However, Tag Heuer Porsche’s Andre Lotterer and ROKiT Edoardo Mortara topped the timing board, respectively.
Despite their best attempts, Lotterer put in the fastest time in group A followed by Mortara, Vergne. While Vandoorne managed to put in the fourth fastest time to progress into the next stage of qualifying.
Group B
Nick Cassidy was the first driver to get onto the Mexican track, once the track went into green conditions. As such, the Envision Racing driver was the first to put a timed lap on the board with a 1:08.178. This was soon beaten by Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans and the reigning champion, Mercedes’ Nyck de Vries who secured a 1:08.050 lap.
However, Techeetah’s Antonio Felix Da Costa topped the leaderboard in Group B with a 1:07.801, closely followed by Envision’s Robin Frijns, Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein and Mahindra Racing’s Alexander Sims.
Similar to group A, Mercedes’ De Vries only just scraped through to the next stage of qualifying with 0.004 seconds over Cassidy.
Duel 1 – Nyck de Vries vs Andre Lotterer
The defending Formula E champion faced Porsche’s Lotterer in the first duel. #
Lotterer lost time against the Mercedes in the first corner, but managed to catch up to De Vries as the Dutchman ventured through the stadium section.
By the end of the two seperate laps, Lotterer knocked out the defending champion to progress into the semi finals.
Duel 2 – Frijns vs Mortara
Frijns struggled into the second and third corners as the Envision driver picked up dirt into the first corner. However, he managed to hit the apex of turn three.
As a result, the championship leader, Mortara, kept it neat and tidy and knocked out Frijns.
Duel 3 – Jean Eric Vergne vs Antonio Felix Da Costa
In the battle of the DS Techeetah’s it was very close as Vergne was slower in the opening corners than his teammate Da Costa.
But, the two-time Formula E champion managed to pull back the time and win the quarter-final qualifying session.
Duel 4 – Stoffel Vandoorne vs Pascal Wehrlein
Similar to Frijns in the second duel, Vandoorne clipped the dirt on the exit of the first corner, and nearly clipped the barrier on the exit. While Wehrlein was neat and tidy into the opening corners.
As such, the dirt severely damaged the Mercedes fight as he finished half a second behind the Porsche’s fastest time.
Which meant both Porsche drivers had knocked out both Mercedes drivers in the first knock out stages.
Semi-final duel 1 – Edoardo Mortara vs Andre Lotterer
Mortara led the first flying lap of the first semi-final duels, both drivers nailed the first corner but after turn three the gap between the drivers was over two-tenths – in favour or Mortara.
Despite his best efforts, Mortara secured the faster lap and knocked out Lotterer as a result.
Semi-final duel 2 – Jean-Eric Vergne vs Pascal Wehrlein
Both drivers were incredibly close into turn three as the gap was very marginal between the two drivers.
However, Wehrlein made a massive gain in the middle and final sectors to put in the fastest lap time of the day with a 1:07.035.
Final – Edoardo Mortara vs Pascal Wehrlein
The championship leader was the first to start his flying lap over Wehrlein. Both drivers nailed the opening corner.
However, Wehrlein was behind Mortara and began to catch the championship leader.
Mortara went into the final corner a bit too hot and ended up in a spin. Fortunately, Mortara slid across the line as he began to lose control of his car.
Despite trailing in the splits, Wehrlein managed to pull it back and secured pole position ahead of the Mexico City E-Prix!
