Formula E 2022 New York City: Stoffel Vandoorne tops first practice

Mercedes-EQ’s championship contender, Stoffel Vandoorne, topped the timing sheets ahead of the Formula E New York City E-Prix double header.

How free practice unfolded…

As soon as the session went green, the Jaguar TCS Racing’s of Sam Bird and Mitch Evans were the first drivers to get out onto the dusty track around the Red Hook district, in Brooklyn.

Not even, two minutes in, the race director brought out the full course yellow test. The session quickly went back to green-flag conditions.

Evans was one of the first drivers to top the timing boards, in the opening minutes, ahead of Envision Racing’s Nick Cassidy and Bird who were P2 and P3 respectively.

However, this was soon beaten by ROKiT Venturi Racing’s Lucas Di Grassi, ahead of DS Techeetah’s Antonio Felix Da Costa (P2) and Tag Heuer Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein (P3).

While the cars cleaned up the dust off the racing line, and the lap times continued to tumble, Mercedes-EQ’s Stoffel Vandoorne topped the timing board. Envision Racing’s Robin Frijns looked to quickly jump straight up to the top of the timing board, but after two purple sectors the Envision driver retired to the pit lane.

However, Da Costa jumped to the top of the timing board as he secured a quick 1:11.128 lap around the Brooklyn circuit.

Once again, the fastest lap time dropped as Wehrlein topped the timing sheets with a 1:10.531, which stood 0.298 faster than, now, second-placed Da Costa.

Shortly after Wehrlein’s fastest lap time, Da Costa fell down to P6 as Oliver Rowland (Mahindra Racing), Jake Dennis (Avalanche Andretti), Sebastian Buemi (Nissan e.dams), Vandoorne and Jean-Eric Vergne (DS Techeetah) went faster than the former world champion.

In the end, thanks to track evolution, Mercedes’ Vandoorne topped the timing board with a 1:09.836, 0.299 seconds ahead of Dragon/Penske Autosport’s Sergio Sette Camara and Rowland who were P2 and P3 respecitvely.
