19th June 2022Monster Energy’s Fabio Quartararo put in a dominating performance to secure victory at the Sachsenring for the MotoGP German Grand Prix
How the race unfolded…
After qualifying on Saturday, Ducati Lenovo’s Francesco Bagnaia took pole position ahead of the MotoGP German GP. On the front row, the pole sitter was sat alongside Monster Energy’s Fabio Quartararo and Prima Pramac’s Johann Zarco who were P2 and P3, respectively.
It was an okay start from the pole sitter, but it was a better one from Quartararo who managed to moved down the inside into turn one and take the lead away from Bagnaia. At the end of the first lap, Bagnaia tried to return the favour but Quartararo knew he was coming allowed him through, but he Monster rider switched back down the inside line and retook the lead.
Despite Bagnaia’s best efforts to put Quartararo under pressure, the Ducati rider lost control and crashed out of the race. As he went down into turn one behind the Monster Energy Bike, the Italian’s rear tyre slipped away from him as he applied a little bit of throttle on the exit.
After Quartararo established a 1.5 second gap between himself and Zarco, the leader started to edge away from the Prima Pramac bike. At the same time, Aprilia’a Alexis Espargaro and Maverick Vinales found themselves in an intense fight for the final podium spot.
Ducati’s Jack Miller, who sat P5 at the time, joined the fight for third. However, the Australian moved up to P4 after Vinales made a mistake on lap 19 of 20, at turn seven. After the Spaniard’s mistake which cost him P4, the Aprilia rider soon returned to the pit lane and retired from of the race.
On the run down to turn one, on lap 22, Miller was much closer to Espargaro and finally made a move to take P3. However, the Australian carried too much speed into the braking zone and went deep into the corner. This allowed Espargaro to switch back down the inside and retake P3.
On lap 26, Miller repeated the same move into turn one but it ended in the same conclusion as the Australian went too deep and Espargaro switched back to regain P3. However, Miller was soon able to make the move stick in the dying laps.
After he secured the race lead in the opening lap, Quartararo put in a dominating performance to secure the race win with over five second in hand over Zarco, in P2.
