Spain GP: Felipe Drugovich tops F2 practice
20th May 2022MP Motorsport’s Felipe Drugovich topped the timing sheets with a 1:30.886 lap in Formula 2’s practice session, ahead Prema’s Jehan Daruvala.
How practice unfolded
With less than 40 minutes on the clock, VAR’s Amaury Cordeel and Jake Hughes were the only drivers to set their first lap times on Spain’s Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with the former on top. However, the red flag was quickly waved with less than 36 minutes to go as Campos’ Olli Caldwell found himself in the barrier at turn nine.
Caldwell who was on a fast lap, whipped his car around the high-speed corner of turn nine but his rear tyres lost grip. As a result, his car rotated around before it skipped across the gravel and into the barrier. Fortunately for the Campos driver, the car bled speed as it rotated and the impact with the barrier was reduced but Caldwell was still forced to retire.
With less than half an hour to go, the session was back underway and the field returned to the track to complete their initial lap times.
17 drivers finally completed their first lap times, but Hitech’s Marcus Armstrong lost control with his rear tyres as he flung his car around turn four. In a similar manor to Caldwell before, Armstrong’s rear tyres lost grip but the New Zealander managed to briefly regain control before his tyres completely gave way. As a result, the Hitech driver ended up in a spin and beached in the gravel trap.
A second red flag was brought out due to Armstrong’s stranded car.
With just under 17 minutes left on the clock, the session resumed. However, there were no representative lap times amongst the field due to the two red flag stoppages.
Less than eight minute remained on the clock, Dams’ Roy Nissany – who was P18 at the time – was noted for a second offence as he failed to follow the race directors notes. But it was upgraded to an investigation which was due to take place after the session.
In other matters, more representative times were set by the field as MP Motorsports Felipe Drugovich topped the time sheets with a 1:30.886, ahead of Prema’s Jehan Daruvala and Carlin’s Logan Sargent respectively. While the championship leader, ART’s Theo Pourchaire was sat in P8 as the session ventured into its final minutes.
