F2 Spain test: Day one in Barcelona
13th April 2022 0 By Kamron KentFormula 2 returned to testing yesterday, at Spain’s Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, in anticipation for the European leg of the 2022 championship.
How the first day unfolded…
Morning
After a light sprinkling of rain the track was a cold 14 degrees.
The F2 championship leader, MP Motorsport’s Felipe Drugovich occupied himself at the top of the 1:29.755 lap around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Followed closely by ART’s Theo Pourchaire who was second, 0.165 seconds off the pace.
Dams’ Ayumu Iwasa, Juri Vips (Hitech) and Jack Doohan (Virtuosi) completed the top five respectively.

There were three stoppages in the first day of testing as Trident’s Calan Williams spun before stopping at turn 2. Carlin’s Liam Lawson came to a stop at turn 10 and Cem Bolukbasi lost control at turn nine and ended up in the barrier.
Van Amersfoort Racing’s Jake Hughes rounded out the top ten behind; Logan Sargent (Carlin), Ralph Boschung (Campos), Lawson and Marcus Armstrong (Hitech) respectively.
Afternoon
The Spanish track temperature rose by five degrees, from the morning session into the afternoon runs.
Armstrong set the benchmark for the remaining 20 drivers to beat as he put in a 1:29.897. However, this was soon beaten by Boschung who secured a 1:27.929 – a clear second faster. While Armstrong tried his best to claw back the top spot, he couldn’t put in a similar time and settled for second place.
A brilliant lap from @BoschungRalph puts him over a second ahead of the pack 🤯👏

Iwasa, Marino Sato (Virtuosi) and Drugovich closed out the top five respectively, in the afternoon session.
Two more red flags brought the days total up to five as Vips tagged the barriers at turn three while Sargent’s Carlin came to a halt at turn one.
MP Motorsport’s Clement Novalak rounded off the top 10 in the final session of the day, behind; Hughes, Richard Verscoor (Trident), Frederick Vesti (ART) and Pourchaire respectively.
The test will continue up to April 14.
