F3 Spain GP: ART’s Victor Martins tops practice
20th May 2022 0 By Kamron KentART’s championship leader, Victor Martins topped the timing sheets in Formula 3’s practice session at Spain’s Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
How practice unfolded…
In the only practice session for F3 across the weekend, as usual, a handful of the field ventured out onto the track. After completing a lap, from the pit lane, a couple of drivers such as Prema’s Arthur Leclerc returned to the pits after an installation lap while the remaining cars on the track completed their first timed laps.
Charouz’s Lirim Zendeli was the first driver to complete a timed lap but his first loop of the track was four seconds off the pace. However, despite improving his time, Carlin’s Zak O’Sullivan topped the timing board with a 1:35.420 ahead of his teammates: Brad Benavides and Enzo Trulli respectively.
After the first 10 minutes, all three Carlin drivers topped the top three positions in the leaderboard. However, Hitech’s Nazim Azman split the Carlin’s after he moved up to second place, 0.541 seconds off the pace.
With 30 minutes remaining, Van Amserfoort Racing’s Reece Ushijima toppled O’Sullivan from the top spot after the British driver put in a quick 1:34.869 lap, 0.551 seconds quicker than the Carlin driver. However, Ushijima was soon demoted by Campos’ David Vidales, Jenzer Racing’s Ido Cohen and Campos’ Josep Marti respectively.
As spec series returned to the Spanish track, the maximum top speed is expected to be around 290km/h.
As the clock ticked down, the top three changed hands once again, with just over 20 minutes remaining. ART’s championship leader Victor Martins topped the timing board with a 1:32.796 – beating Dennis Hauger’s lap record last season. Leclerc also climbed up to second ahead of Trident’s Roman Stanek who was third.
Despite Leclerc’s best attempts, the Monegasque driver couldn’t topple Martins from top of the timing sheets as practice drew to a close.
