F3 Emilia-Romagna Qualifying: Zane Maloney secures pole position
22nd April 2022Trident’s Zane Maloney secured pole position as Carlin’s Enzo Trulli made contact with Prema’s Arthur Leclerc to bring out a late red flag.
How qualifying went…
In a uniformed fashion, the majority of the field ventured out onto the track as the pit exit light went green. However, Enzo Trulli, son of former F1 driver, Jarno Trulli, waited in the pit lane a bit longer before he left the pit lane.
Jenzer Motorsport’s Ido Cohen lead the field out of the pit lane and naturally set the first lap time with a 1:48.717 – which was immediately toppled by his teammate, William Alatalo.
After the first round of timed laps, Hitech’s Isack Hadjar topped the timing board with a 1:44.383, ahead of ART’s Victor Martins and Carlin’s Zak O’Sullivan respectively.
All the drivers set their lap times on the blue-ringed, full wet tyres as F3 don’t have the privilege of intermediate tyres unlike Formula 1 – who do have that privilege.
With 20 minutes left on the clock, out of a total 30 minutes, Prema’s Arthur Leclerc – Brother of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc – obtained provisional pole position with a 1:43.904 as O’Sullivan and MP Motorsport’s Caio Collet improve their times to sit P2 and P3 respectively.
While the track was evolving and drying up, Trulli opted to go out with the yellow-ringed, slick, dry tyres with 10 minutes left on the clock.
During this time, as the Italian tip-toed around his home track, Prema’s Oliver Bearman topped the timing board but he was soon beaten by Trident’s Roman Stanek who obtained provisional pole ahead of Martins and Alatalo respectively.
In the late stages of qualifying, Leclerc had beached himself in the gravel trap after Trulli made contact with the Monegasque Prema – on the exit of the penultimate corner. As a result, a red flag was brought out to allow the track marshals to removed the stranded car.
Race control announced the incident between Leclerc and Trulli would be investigated after the race.
Although Leclerc’s stranded car hindered Hadjar’s potential pole position lap, the French driver managed to top the timing board but his time was beaten by Trident’s Zane Maloney – who secured the feature race pole position.
