Formula E Monaco E-Prix: Stoffel Vandoorne secures win in the Principality
30th April 2022Mercedes’ Stoffel Vandoorne finished P1 in the Principality of Monaco as the Belgian pipped Jaguar’s pole sitter’s Mitch Evans to the race win.
How the race unfolded…
Mitch Evans made a good start and maintained his position, ahead of Tag Heuer Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein into Saint Devote. However, as the pack raced around the streets of Monaco, it remained well behaved. By the end of the first lap, Evans remained out in front ahead of Wehrlein, DS Techeetah’s championship leader: Jean-Eric Vergne and Mercedes’ Stoffel Vandoorne.
With just over 41 minutes left on the clock, after two laps, race control enabled attack mode. This will allow drivers an extra 13% more power for four minutes.
Envision’s Nick Cassidy, in P19, was the first driver to activate his first bout of attack mode. Dragon Penske’s Antonio Giovinazzi became Cassidy’s first victim as the New Zealander tried to move up the field. By the end of Cassidy’s attack mode, he made up two places as he overtook Giovinazzi and Jaguar’s Sam Bird who made a mistake early on.
Dan Ticktum became the second driver to activate his first round of attack mode before Nissan E Dams’ Maxmilian Gunther and DS’s Antonio Felix Da Costa activated theirs.
Bird became the first driver to retire from the race as he returned to the pits with wishbone damage.
Out of the front runners, Evans sacraficed the race lead to Wehrlein as the British driver activated his first amount of attack mode. As Evans moved off the racing line, to activate the extra power boost, Vergne sneaked up to second place. A lap later, Wehrlein gained his first power boost and Vergne managed to move up into the lead. As a result, Evans dropped down to third behind Vergne and Wehrlein.
But, it wasn’t long before Wehrlein managed to pip Vergne to the lead of the race. However, the Porsche driver began to drop down to last, around the iconic Monaco hairpin, but he ground to a halt on the exit of the tunnel. Race control then brought out a full course yellow, this limited the cars to 50kmh. Prior to this, Vandoorne had moved up into P1, ahead of Evans and Vergne respectively.
With just under 16 minutes left, plus one additional lap, Vandoorne activated his final bout of attack mode. However, it was wasted as Porsche’s Andre Lotterer found himself into the barrier at Saint Devote, race control deployed the Porsche Taycan safety car as a result.
With less than nine minutes, the race got back underway.
