ROKiT Venturi Racing’s Edoardo Mortara secured his third Formula E win as the Oliver Sims’ stranded Mahrinda brought out a very late safety car in Diriyah!

How the race unfolded…

It was another great start from Mercedes-EQ Nyck De Vries as the pole-sitter, and round one winner, led the pack into the first corner. However, Mahindra’s Alexander Sims had went wide on the exit of turn one and the British driver rejoined the track into turn two, albiet further back than he would’ve hoped.

Mahrinda’s Oliver Rowland and Avalanche Andretti’s Jake Dennis were the first drivers to activate their first bout of attack mode, which provided the two drivers with 30kW of additional power – for just under four minutes – which brought their amount of power available up to 250kW.

On lap 11, Askew slid around the Diriryah circuit as the car temporarily lost grip, this meant that Tag Heuer Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein and Antonio Felix De Costa (DS Techeetah) picked up the scraps as the two drivers overtook the American around the 14th corner.

It was an intense battle between the defending world champion, De Vries and Di Grassi. De Vries defended into turn one and pushed Di Grassi wide on the exit. Di Grassi attempted to return the favour, into turn two, and managed to squeeze through and gain the lead of the race.

While ROKiT Venturi Racing’s Edoardo Mortara and Di Grassi were battling it out for the lead of the race, De Vries still had his final bout of attack mode available with just over 20 minutes to go. On the other hand, Mortara and Di Grassi had used up their allocation of attack mode.

The incident between De Vries and Di Grassi was put under investigation by race control. But there was no further action necessary for the turn one incident.

De Vries defended from DS Techeetah’s Jean Eric Vergne into turn one. However, as the championship leader, De Vries, locked up into turn one the two-time Formula E champion waltzed past the Mercedes driver. De Vries tried to return to the track, the Mercedes slammed into the side of the DS Techeetah.

As a result, the championship leader plummeted down the order but he stopped falling when he reached P10.

Trouble struck at Mahrinda as Sims was stopped on the outside line by the sixth corner when he made a hard hit on the exit of turn five. Due to the stranded car, the Safety Car was deployed to allow the track marshals to remove the Sims’ Mahrinda.

The race ultimately finished behind the safety car but the Porsche ventured into the pits and allowed the drivers to fight it out for three corners before Mortara crossed the finish line to win.

Podium:

  1. Edoardo Mortara, ROKiT Venturi Racing
  2. Robin Frijns, Envision Racing
  3. Lucas Di Grassi, ROKiT Venturi Racing
