Moto2 American Grand Prix: Tony Arbolino wins in crash filled race

ELF Marc VDS Racing’s Tony Arbolino won the Moto2 American Grand Prix at the Circuit of The Americas as a number of riders crashed out in the race.

How the race unfolded…

It was a decent start for pole sitter, American Racing’s Cameron Beabuier but Mooney VR46’s Celestino Vietti took the inside line into turn one. As the By the end of COTA’s back straight, there were a number of riders involved with a crash: Gabriel Rodrigo, Sam Lowes, Fermin Aldeguer, Zonta Van Den Goorbergh and Somkiat Chantra.

By the end of the first lap, the pole sitter, fell from first to fourth.

On lap four, MV Augusta Simone Corsi on the long loop section by turn 13. Soon after, Red Bull KTM’s Pedro Acosta crashed out at turn three as he lost grip on the kerb of turn three. As a result, Acosta slid across the run off and back across the track. Fortunately, the following rider – Idemitsu’s Ai Ogura – managed to avoid the crashed biker.

While Vietti secured the lead of the race, he fell down to second as the sport ventured around their fifth lap. However, his grip on the championship lead slipped from his clutches as he crashed at turn six.

On lap eight, Flexbox HP40’s Aron Canet slipped off his bike at turn seven and ELF Marc’s Arbolino inherited the Moto2 race lead as a result. Following the crash, this then meant Vietti’s championship lead remained in place.

Despite Ogura’s best efforts to close the gap to Arbolino, who remained out in the lead, the Japanese came under increasing pressure from third placed Jake Dixon (Shimoko GASGAS Aspar Team).

As Arbolino went to cross the finish line, to win the race, the pole sitter lost control of his bike and Beaubier found himself in a slide which ran off the track and onto the run-off area, at turn 16.
