Team Penske’s Joey Logano blasted his Ford Mustang over the finish line to win the inaugural Clash at the Coliseum last night as the NASCAR season gets underway!

This was the first time the NASCAR exhibition race was held outside the Daytona International Speedway, as it was taken at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

It was also the first time fans got to see the next generation of the stock cars. Like other motorsports across the globe, COVID-19 played a part in pushing back the newest regulation changes, but the newest changes came to fruition this year.

How Joey Logano won the clash…

With a total of 150 laps to be completed on the incredibly short quarter-mile circuit, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch – in the Toyota Camry – was leading the pack as the race went under green conditions. While Logano sat in fourth.

As the race creeped over its first third, Ricky Stenhouse found himself facing the wrong direction after he spun around on lap 54. Shortly after, Logano found himself up to P2 after Richard Childress Racing’s Tyler Reddick – who had led for the majority of the race – was forced to retire from the race due to a drivetrain issue. Which meant Busch had naturally regained the lead.

On lap 75, Logano gave Busch a slight love-tap on the Camry’s rear bumper which allowed Penske’s driver to slip up the inside line towards turn one. The Penske driver managed to hold onto the position while Joe Gibbs’ driver yielded the position into turn four.

However, Logano did lost that position. But, the Connecticut driver was able to make a move into turn one – with 34 laps remaining, while Kaulig Racing’s Justin Haley was forced into the barrier wrecking his teams Chevrolet.

But, with the move completed on Busch, Logano managed to hold out and secure his first win of 2022.
