Antonelli has an almost-certain chance of securing the Formula 1 world drivers championship this weekend, with the young Italian needing to only score two points to claim the title ahead of his teammate, George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.

Whilst it is the second weekend offering the opportunity for Antonelli, it prompts the Mercedes driver’s first real chance at the title after Austin.

At the United States Grand Prix, last weekend, the Mercedes driver had an unlikely-yet-possible chance to take the title, with the championship leader needing to secure a win and for his rivals to falter.

However, this weekend, Antonelli needs to finish ninth or higher regardless to where Russell and Hamilton finish to take the title, with the title still going to him if neither  of his rivals win the race.

As such, the FIA have now confirmed the post-race procedure in the event which includes wording in the event that Antonelli claims the championship crown on Sunday.

Lewis Hamilton claims 105th pole position at Mexico City Grand Prix

In the post-race procedure document, the FIA said:

“After taking the chequered flag the top three (3) drivers should stop at the exit of Turn 13 where they will find the boards showing positions from 1, 2, 3. Drivers from 4th and beyond must proceed directly to pit entry.

“In the event of a World Champion being crowned, even if outside of top three (3), he will be required to stop at Turn 13, where he will find a World Champion board.

“In the event of a World Champion being crowned and outside of top three (3) his team mechanics are required to be in position in the zone marked ‘Authorised Personnel’ on the attached map no later than two (2) laps before the end of the race.

“The World Champion car should also be pushed towards the podium.”

If Antonelli claims the title, the young Italian will join the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Juan Manuel Fangio and Jacques Villeneuve to claim their first world title in only their second season of F1.

Additionally, he will become the new record holder of the youngest ever F1 world champion at only 20 years old.
