Fourmaux has seen his chances of winning a World Rally Championship event, in this generation of rally car, slashed after the Frenchman was hit with a puncture on the opening stage of Saturday’s action.

The Hyundai driver started the third day of Rally Italia Sardegna in second place, having led the event for most of Friday before Thierry Neuville snatched the rally lead on the final test of the day, pipping the Frenchman by 0.4 seconds.

However, Fourmaux has dropped from second to fourth overall after suffering a puncture on SS8, before the 20km split.

As a result of dragging his car to the end of the stage, the Hyundai driver lost over 50 seconds. As a result, it means Toyota’s Oliver Solberg, Sebastien Ogier and Sami Pajari move up into second, third and fourth, respectively.

Solberg and Pajari are one of three championship contenders vying for the title come Sunday, and as Fourmaux stopped in fifth, the French Hyundai driver remains ahead of Toyota’s championship leader, Elfyn Evans.

In turn, this makes another dramatic move into the championship, with both Solberg and Pajari inching closer to the Welshman. Solberg remains closest, second in the championship, provisionally, 12 points behind Evans whilst Pajari sits 13 points behind the points-leader.
