Saturday’s qualifying session threw a spanner into the works for Mercedes’ George Russell after Gasly, a Italian GP race winner, clinched the top spot in the final runs of Q3.
The Briton would’ve expected to have an easier run around Monza as his championship-leading teammate, and title-rival, Kimi Antonelli was expected to take a grid penalty for exceeding his power unit allocation.
Antonelli was one of a handful of drivers who took grid penalties, for the Italian Grand Prix with the likes of Williams’ Alexander Albon and Red Bull Racing’s Liam Lawson, who is standing in for Isack Hadjar.
Piastri suspects ‘interesting’ Italian Grand Prix after grid penalty
Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso has made changes to his car with extra power unit components and with it being under parc ferme conditions, the two-time world champion will start in the pit lane.
Lawson will join in him in the pit lane for a change to his rear wing.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri had been given a three-place grid penalty and will start in sixth after he impeded Lawson in Q2, on Saturday.
