On Thursday morning, Red Bull confirmed Verstappen had extended his current contract with the squad that has helped propel him into the four-time world champion he is today.

The Dutchman’s previous contract was only sealed until 2028, but the new extension will keep Verstappen at Milton Keynes for another two years, ending in 2030.

As a result of the announcement, speculation of the four-time champion’s future has now ground to a halt after rumours suggested that Verstappen was shaping a move to jump over to McLaren. However, ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, Verstappen has expressed that he feels it was ‘the right call.’ He said:

“I think it was the right call. I feel really good within the team and, yeah, we have a lot of belief that, you know, we can, let’s say, get back to the top in the coming years.”

At the start of the current set of regulations, Verstappen has been vocal on his displeasure with the current ruleset. The Dutch driver claimed the rules were not natural and a state of ‘anti-driving,’ as a result of the latest introductions of power unit and chassis regulations.

However, the Dutchman confirmed the latest announcement to remain at Red Bull was about ‘continuing in Formula 1.’

Ahead of the Dutch GP, the four-time champion has said his views on the regulations have shifted and he is ‘willing to live with it,’ explaining the rules are improving since the start of the season. He continued:

“It was mainly about actually continuing in Formula 1. But, yeah, the rules are slowly getting a bit better and, let’s say, I’m willing to live with it. And hopefully, you know, by 2030 it opens up another opportunity, potentially with V8 engines coming in, to look again.”

Verstappen is not the only driver to extend his current contract. His former teammates Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon have also been announced with contract extensions at the Wantage-based team ahead of the Dutch GP.

The Dutch Grand Prix prepares for its farewell from Formula 1, and will get underway on Friday with FP1 and Sprint Qualifying, from August 21 until August 23.
