Mercedes expects more demanding second half of F1 season
19th August 2026Mercedes’ team principal, Toto Wolff, suspects the second half of the Formula 1 season will be more demanding than the first as the sport resumes in Zandvoort this weekend.

The first half of the F1 season saw Mercedes dominate the early stages, with six back-to-back wins, spanning from the season opener in Australia to the Monaco Grand Prix.
Before the summer break, the Silver Arrows outfit picked up a total of eight wins, with the championship leader, Kimi Antonelli, picking up most of these with six victories to his name.
However, as the season wore on, with increasing performances from their closest rivals, other teams managed to pick up wins. Ferrari picked up two with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc respectively, and McLaren took victory, with Lando Norris, last time out in Hungary.
Reliability has left points on the table, picked up by their rivals, with both Mercedes suffering retirements due to mechanical and technical problems. Russell was the first to hit in Canada with battery problems, then Antonelli followed in Barcelona with a mechanical failure.

Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Wolff acknowledges that the second half of the season will be harder than the first half, but is confident they can unlock performance. He said:
“We have left points on the table, our rivals have reduced the performance gap, and we know the second half of the year will demand more from us than the first.
“The championships will be decided by execution and the rate of development we can bring to the car across the next 12 races.
“Whilst we are slightly out of step with upgrades compared to our rivals, we have more performance to unlock and a clear development plan to do so.”
The Dutch Grand Prix will bring Formula 1 back to the track this weekend, and with it the sprint format will return with it.
Since its return to the calendar back in 2021, Mercedes have never won at the seaside circuit, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen picking up three back-to-back wins at his home track before Norris broke the Dutchman’s streak. Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri picked up his own win at the track last season.

Mercedes have only ever finished runners-up at the circuit, with their former star, Hamilton, finishing second behind Verstappen in 2021, with Valtteri Bottas completing the podium for the Silver Arrows.
Russell followed suit the year after, finishing second behind Verstappen.
With this season being the last appearance for the Dutch Grand Prix, it will be the final chance for Mercedes to break the duck this weekend.
“Zandvoort has been a unique challenge since its return,” continued Wolff. “It is a difficult track to master, the fans create an incredible atmosphere, and it has become a race that the teams and drivers look forward to.
“We have come close but never won there in the modern era. This is our final opportunity to change that, and that’s a challenge we would like to meet.”
The Dutch GP will get underway on Friday, August 21 until Sunday, August 23.
