Verstappen’s well-known race engineer, Lambiase – more commonly known as GP – has been confirmed to leave the Red Bull stable in 2028, as the Briton is set to join McLaren as their Chief Racing Officer.
The race engineer has partnered with Verstappen since the Dutchman was promoted to the senior squad and helped support the world champion in winning four consecutive world drivers’ championships from 2021 to 2024.
More recently, the Red Bull man has taken over the role as Head of Racing at the Milton Keynes team, whilst continuing to lead Verstappen as the pair adjust to the latest set of Formula 1 regulations.
In a statement, Red Bull confirmed:
“Oracle Red Bull Racing confirms that Gianpiero Lambiase will leave the team in 2028, when his current contract expires. ‘GP’ is a valued member of the team, which he joined in 2015.
“Until his planned departure, ‘GP’ continues in his roles as Head of Racing and as Race Engineer to Max Verstappen. The team and he are fully committed to add more success to our strong track record together.”
Lambiase is set to take on a role that currently exists in the McLaren squad, freeing up some of the duties currently held by team principal Andrea Stella.
McLaren claims his appointment in the near future will help strengthen and support the team’s current talent pool whilst confirming its commitment to remain as a championship-winning team.
The Woking-based team have recently taken in talent from the Red Bull stable with the likes of Rob Marshal moving over to McLaren as Sporting Director at the beginning of 2026.
One question remains: following Helmut Marko’s departure and now Lambiase’s announcement to leave Red Bull, does it mean Verstappen’s days are numbered in the sport, with concerns that he will leave F1 soon?
