As the Japanese Grand Prix approaches, Mercedes is set to continue their early dominance. After clinching his maiden win in China, all eyes are on teenage talent Kimi Antonelli to continue the Mercedes magic.

Antonelli is no stranger to the Suzuka circuit. In his rookie season, in 2025, he became the youngest fastest-lap setter and lap leader, holding the race lead for 10 of the 53 laps.

A year later, and now just days away, he will return as a Formula 1 race winner.

Looking ahead to Japan

Despite delivering a race win already, Mercedes expresses that this is only the beginning for Antonelli. Team Principal Toto Wolff says that Antonelli’s win in China was a “great achievement and a moment to be proud of.” He said:

“His win in China was a great achievement and a moment to be proud of. However, his focus and ours are on what is ahead. His first victory is a first step and all that matters is how he builds on it. We will support him to navigate the expectations that come with performing at the front more consistently.”

However, the Japanese Grand Prix is no joke. This track will test the young Italian and help determine if he has what it takes to compete at the front consistently.

Mercedes’ third driver, Frederick Vesti, says:

“The fast, flowing corners push you physically and mentally, demanding precision, commitment, and total trust in the car.”

Support from Mercedes

Physical demands aside, the mental pressure may be Antonelli’s biggest challenge yet. Now Antonelli has tasted victory, the pressure to deliver again has increased.

With Mercedes dominating the rest of the field, claiming win after win so far this season, the expectation of seeing the number 12 car at the front of the grid is here. While expectations are high and pressure is looming, Wolff has promised support as the young Italian navigates expectations to compete at the front.

With Antonelli’s race reputation around the Suzuka circuit and the powerful performance shown by the W17, can Mercedes and Kimi Antonelli keep the momentum going? Or will the pressure be too much?

Find out on Sunday, 29 March, when the five red lights go out for the start of the Japanese Grand Prix!
