The sunlight had made way to darkness, following on from the first practice session, and no one was eager to head straight out onto the Las Vegas track. However, the two Alpine’s and Mercedes’ George Russell were the first to head out onto the track after six minutes had elapsed on the clock.

Mediums were the preferred tyre once more for the opening stints of the session, with everyone bar Kick Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto using the yellow-walled tyre. Bortoleto was the only driver to use the hard tyre for the opening stint.

A handful of drivers had suffered problems at the end of the Las Vegas Strip as Haas’ Oliver Bearman, McLaren’s Lando Norris and Racing Bull’s Isack Hadjar all locked up and had to take to the run off at the end of the iconic stretch of tarmac.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc had his own moment, heading into the second half of the session, up at turn nine as the Monegasque locked up and stopped before he nose-dived into the barrier.

With 20 minutes on the clock, the session was red-flagged due to a problem with a manhole cover out on the track, reported by the marshals. The session was stopped as a precaution. With six minutes left on the clock, the session was resumed.

However, minutes later, the session was red-flagged again due to track maintenance, and the session ended under those conditions.

Additionally, there were problems for Leclerc, who retired on track after being ordered not to shift gears.
