At the Circuit of The Americas, Verstappen dominated the grand prix as the four-time world champion strengthened his championship bid, having taken the sprint race and grand prix victories this weekend.

From the launch, into turn one, Verstappen never looked to be under threat as the race got underway, as the four-time world champion gained a second advantage in the first lap. It left the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc to contend with Lando Norris’ McLaren for second place.

Verstappen started to ebb away out front, leading ahead over 10 seconds by the time of the first set of pit stops, whilst the fight came down for second place.

Leclerc tussled fiercely for the runner-up spot in both stints, but Norris was able to snatch the position away from the Monegasque. However, the leading Mclaren had to be careful due to a looming threat of a timed penalty after being given a black-and-white flag for track limits in the first stint.

In the end, Verstappen sealed victory with seven seconds in hand over Norris, who finished second ahead of Leclerc, in third.

While the Constructors’ championship was decided last time out in Singapore, Verstappen’s double victory in the United States means he will take a 23-point chunk out of Oscar Piastri’s lead, who finished fifth overall.

The result doesn’t change the overall standings in the drivers’ championship with Piastri (346 points) heading teammate Norris (332 points) and Verstappen (306 points), in second and third, respectively.

It means Piastri holds a 14-point advantage over Norris but, more importantly, leads 40 points ahead of the charging Red Bull of Verstappen, with five more Grand Prix – and two more sprint races – remaining.
