The Welsh Rally1 driver, Evans, has once again secured victory to strengthen his impressive start to the season following a second-place and win in both Monte-Carlo and Sweden.
Although Evans opened the road and lost the lead after the second stage, the Welshman fought back all weekend and conquered challenging conditions to secure the victory on African soil.
Since stage nine, where he took the lead away from Hyundai’s Ott Tanak (who held it from stage two), Evans looked unstoppable and the rally his to lose. Something he did not relinquish.
Whilst Evans started the final day of the weekend with a near-two-minute advantage, something which could quickly turn in Africa, the Rally1 crew – alongside co-driver Scott Martin – claimed the victory with one minute still in hand.
The Hyundai crews of Ott Tanak and, the defending champion, Theirry Neuville completed the podium positions in second and third respectively. A much-needed boost for the South Korean manufacturer.
Following the rally win, it means Evans extends his championship lead to 86 points ahead of Neuville and Tanak, who stand as the Welsh driver’s closest contenders, 36 and 39 points behind respectively.
It’s also the first weekend where Toyota has not scored maximum points, like in Monte and Sweden, as they have been outscored by Hyundai for the first time this season.
Toyota will remain the WRC manufacturer’s championship leader with 158 points, 36 points ahead of Hyundai (122 points) and 115 points ahead of M-Sport Ford (43 points).
