Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton has joked to the Formula 1 President and CEO, Stefano Domenicali, saying they need better wet tyres as qualifying was postponed.

Qualifying was not able to be completed on Saturday afternoon in Brazil, as it was scheduled, as heavy rain poured down in the Sao Paulo region causing a two-hour delay to the session.

Despite the best efforts of the teams out on track, operating the road sweepers to clear away standing water, and the safety car testing the conditions – including the Clerk of the Course and the Race Director – the conditions were too treacherous.

The session was officially postponed by F1 and the FIA just before 5pm local time. The FIA confirmed the decision was taken as a result of visibility issues and standing water ‘which renders conditions unsafe.’

As Domenicali was being interviewed by F1’s Will Buxton, confirming the postponed session, the F1 president was briefly interrupted by Hamilton who approached him from the Mercedes garage.

After a greeting and a handshake, Hamilton claimed he wanted to go out and claimed if the sport and Pirelli gave them better wet tyres they’d be able to run in the challenging wet conditions.

“You should’ve sent us out, this is ridiculous we should go out – I want to go out,” Hamilton joked. “If you give us better wet tyres with blankets we’d be able to run in this. I’m putting you on the spot.”

It’s unclear when the session will get underway on Sunday morning, but it’s expected it could be a 9am start (local time). However, rain is expected to be a problem once more as it’s forecasted to rain on Sunday.
