It was revealed on Thursday that McLaren had logged a Right of Review over Lando Norris’ five-second time penalty when he left the track and gained an advantage in his fight with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, at the US Grand Prix last time out.
A hearing was heard on Friday which consisted of representatives from McLaren (Andrea Stella and Randeep Singh), the FIA (Nikolas Tombazis and Tim Malyon) and Red Bull Racing (Jonathan Wheatley and Stephen Knowles).
The hearing was set to determine, at the discretion of the stewards, if ‘a significant and relevant new element is discovered which was unavailable to the parties [McLaren] seeking the review at the time of the decision concerned.’
McLaren believed there was a significant and relevant new element, unavailable to McLaren at the time, which revolved around the document of the decision which the team believed to be incorrect. The Woking-based team argued it evidenced an ‘objective, measurable and provable error had been made by the stewards.’

The leading constructor’s team argued that the statement that Norris’ car was overtaking Verstappen but the team argued this move was already completed, and was ahead of the Dutch driver, at the braking zone.
According to the FIA, the stewards to focus on the issue of one aspect of the criteria; relevance. The Stewards deemed the ‘error’ found by McLaren was ‘unusutainable’ as any new element in the Right of Review must demonstrate the error, and it must be shown to exist.
As a result, the stewards concluded:
“In this case, the concept that the written decision (document number 69) was the significant and relevant new element, or that an error in the decision was a new element, is not sustainable and is, therefore rejected.
“Accordingly, as there is no relevant new element, the Petition is rejected.”
The steward also noted that they believed McLaren lodged the petition in ‘good faith.’
