Despite a troublesome start to CER, Tanak has reigned victorious in the sport’s last outing in Europe for 2024. The Estonian was enjoying a thrilling battle with Toyota’s eight-time world champion Sebastien Ogier until the penultimate stage when the Frenchman crashed out.
As such, it meant the Hyundai championship contender had a fairly straightforward power stage to secure his second win of the season.
Due to Tanak’s win, Thierry Neuville’s podium finish of third could not snatch the title away from his teammate and it has now set up a thrilling end to an entertaining season with a showdown between Neuville and Tanak.
It’s now certain – a Hyundai driver will be 2024 World Rally champion 🏆
The question that remains is: which one? 🇧🇪🇪🇪 #WRC pic.twitter.com/g3wgDJ1TrN

Elfyn Evans finished second in the event, in between the two Hyundai championship rivals, and stands 40 points behind the Belgian in the driver’s championship. In addition to Ogier’s retirement, it means both Evans and Ogier have fallen out of contention for the title.
However, it’s not just the driver’s championship on the line as the team’s championship will also be decided in Japan. As it stands, it means both WRC championship titles will be sealed in the final round of the season – for the first time since 2021.
This was helped by solid performances from Takamoto Katsuta and Evans on Super Sunday, where they finished 1-2 respectively, which has trimmed Hyundai’s championship lead down to 15 points.
