Whilst Ogier had mathematical contention for the championship title, stage 17 of 18 at the Central European Rally brought that title ambition crashing down into a telegraph pole.

Ogier had been fighting over the rally lead throughout the weekend after taking the top spot on Thursday but he soon lost it to Neuville on Friday, only to regain it on Saturday.

Sunday was another day of fighting for the eight-time world champion as he fell behind Hyundai’s Ott Tanak on the opening stage. The two world champions battled it out in the front and stood 1.5 seconds apart going into the final two stages of the weekend.

However, 600m into the 17th stage: Knaus Tabbert Am Hochwald 2, Ogier ran wide at a fast right-hander and collided with one of the trees along the outside part of the course. This collision quickly bounced the eight-time world champion’s Yaris back across the road and into a telegraph pole.

Thankfully, the crew were okay and unhurt following the incident but footage, shown at the incident, showed it was a frustrating moment for the multiple world champion who was seen kneeling and shouting in frustration.

As a result, it means Tanak remains as the rally leader but his closest rival turns to Toyota’s Elfyn Evans who stands 9.4 seconds behind whilst Neuville climbs into the final podium position.

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
