On Thursday, VCARB confirmed Ricciardo will not drive for the rest of the 2024 season as Lawson steps in to replace the Australian in the team for the United States Grand Prix, in Austin.

Ricciardo’s position in the sport has been under pressure all season as he looked to fight back to the front to become Max Verstappen’s teammate at Red Bull.

Last weekend, it was speculated that Ricciardo would take part in his last race of the season at Singapore and – four days later – this has been confirmed to be true.

On Ricciardo’s departure, VCARB Team Principal, Laurent Mekies said:

“Everyone here at VCARB would like to thank Daniel for his hard work across the last two seasons with us.

“He has brought a lot of experience and talent to the Team with a fantastic attitude, which has helped everyone to develop and foster a tight team spirit. Daniel has been a true gentleman both on and off the track and never without that smile.

“He will be missed, but will always hold a special place within the Red Bull family.”

For now, Lawson will step in for the remaining six race weekends of the season, a double triple-header to conclude the 2024 championship.

The team is already familiar with the Kiwi who stepped in for Ricciardo last season when the Australian broke his wrist in the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix.

Lawson put himself in the spotlight for an F1 seat, before RB – then Alpha Tauri – confirmed the Yuki Tsunoda/Ricciardo line up for 2024. During his five-race stint, the Kiwi took home his maiden points finish of ninth at the Singapore GP last year, finishing ninth.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to welcome Liam,” commented Mekies. “He already knows the Team well. He drove for us last season, and coped well under difficult circumstances, so it’ll be a natural transition.

“It’s great to see young talent from within the Red Bull family make the next step. We’re looking forward to getting our heads down and focusing on the rest of the season together.”
