Andrea Stella praises McLaren’s hard work after taking F1 championship lead

McLaren Team Principal, Andrea Stella has praised the team’s ‘hard work and dedication’ as they overtook Red Bull Racing in the Formula 1 constructors championship.

Following a win from Oscar Piastri and a fourth-place finish from Lando Norris, it has provided McLaren the chance to overtake their championship rivals to go to the top of the standings. 

The gap between the two teams now stands at 20 points after Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished behind Norris and Sergio Perez crashed out, in his tangle with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. 

This means it is the first time the championship has changed, in terms of the top position, in over two years which spanned back at the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix, in May that year.

“[Sunday’s] result also promotes us to first in the Constructors’ Championship, an important milestone in our journey. However, the team remain clearly focused on the task ahead, and we use this positive moment to redouble our efforts for the coming races.

“The progress we’ve made since the start of 2023, when we were at the back of the grid, is down to the hard work and dedication from our entire team, as well as the support from our shareholders and partners.”

McLaren have had positive momentum going into the middle of the season, spurred on from Norris’ Maiden win in Miami. From the Briton’s maiden win, the Woking-based team were 115 points adrift of the former championship leaders. 

However, going into the Belgian Grand Prix – ahead of the annual summer break – McLaren and Red Bull were separated by 42 points, in favour of the latter.

Going into Singapore, this weekend, McLaren will be looking to capitalise their position as they now lead the constructors championship for the first time since 2014.
