After sombre celebrations in Finland, Ogier stands victorious after his teammate – and double-world champion – Kalle Rovanpera crashed out of his home rally a stage before the end.

Rovanpera had been leading the rally up to the penultimate stage with Ogier in second place. However, a large rock unsettled the Finnish world champion’s Rally1 Yaris and put him into the trees – and out of the rally.

As a result, Ogier inherited the rally lead ahead of Hyundai’s championship leader and M-Sport Ford’s Adrien Fourmaux who occupied second and third.

Taking the win at the end of the Power Stage, where he secured the fifth fastest time, Ogier takes home his 61st career victory and first win in Finland since 2013.

Whilst a second-place finish for Neuville maintains the Belgian’s position at the top of the championship, Ogier’s win now catapults the eight-time world champion into a championship fight.

As it stands, provisionally, Neuville leads on 168 points whereas Ogier jumps Ott Tanak to move into second place on 141 points, 27 points behind the Belgian championship leader.

It remains unclear if Ogier will compete in the remaining rounds of the championship but with a sniff of a ninth world championship, he may be enticed to continue for the rest of the season.

Reports have stated that Ogier has entered into Greece which is the next event on September 5 – September 8.

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
