Russell has taken his second victory of the season, after the Austrian Grand Prix, as the 26-year-old led the team to their first 1-2 victory since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
The #63 Mercedes driver started the race down in sixth on the grid and pitted from the race for his first-and-only stop on lap 10.
As the race fell into the late laps, Russell asked the team to consider a one-stop race for the team and this was later confirmed by the Mercedes pit wall shortly after who asked if the Briton was happy to stay out – he agreed.
Despite a charge from his seven-time world champion teammate, Lewis Hamilton, and 16-lap older tyres, Russell was able to keep his teammate behind him as the two Mercedes drivers took the chequered flag in unison.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri completed the podium as he finished, neatly behind the two Mercedes, in third at the chequered flag.
As the two Mercedes were granted permission to race out front, McLaren’s Australian driver was a handful of seconds behind. However, the #81 McLaren quickly cut down the deficit and finished 0.647s behind Hamilton, who was 0.526s behind his race-winning teammate.

Hi, I’m Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion.
I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I’ve loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
