Lando Norris heads McLaren front-row lockout at Hungary GP

Lando Norris will head a McLaren front-row lockout at the Hungarian Grand Prix, ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri, following a dynamic qualifying session.

Norris stands as the pole sitter for the Hungarian Grand Prix as McLaren locked out the front row of the Hungarian grid, teammate Oscar Piastri will start the race from second on the grid.

It marks the Briton’s third career pole position in F1, all with McLaren, and his second of the year which includes the Spanish Grand Prix earlier on in the year. 

Rain threatened throughout the session but never truly came to fruition which allowed a session where soft tyres were the order of the day. 

Norris’ pole position plus Piastri’s second-place start stands as the team’s 63rd front-row lock-out, pipping Williams Racing by 1 to go third overall in terms of most front-row lock-outs.

Despite the achievement, the session was not without issues as the rain fell before qualifying which forced the teams and drivers to consider the starting compounds; softs or intermediates. 

However, the grip level was normal which meant the drivers could go out on the soft, slick tyres. 

Throughout qualifying, two red flags were flown which was accompanied by the threat of rain. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez crashed out in Q1 whilst Yuki Tsunoda, RB, crashed in Q3. 

No one was able to improve their overall times in Q3 bar RB’s Daniel Ricciardo, who beat Tsunoda for a P9 start. 

As a result, the two McLaren’s peeled back into the pits accepting they were on their way to a front-row finish.
