Russell’s second race win ends an 18-month drought without a race win to his name following his maiden victory at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2022, it’s the first win for Mercedes since the same race.

Whilst Mercedes were not in a place to win the race on pure merit, Russell was in the right place at the right time as Norris and Verstappen collided and ruined their chances of winning.

How George Russell won…

Russell qualified for the Austrian Grand Prix in third place, behind both Verstappen and Norris who started in pole and second respectively.

When lights went out, Russell maintained his starting position throughout the majority of the race and kept himself to himself as he trundled around the Red Bull Ring.

However, in the dying embers of the race, the battle out in front started to intensify between Verstappen and Norris and on lap 64 the two drivers collided.

As a result of the collision, both drivers had to limp back to the pit lane with punctures. Verstappen came in and swapped over to the soft tyres whereas Norris was forced to retire from the race.

The collision between Norris and Verstappen allowed Russell to squeeze on through with Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri behind in second and third place.

By the time the chequered flag fell, seven laps later, Russell claimed his second career win – and first podium in Austria – whereas Piastri managed to make up a place on Sainz where the two finished second and third, respectively.

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
