Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville set the pace on the opening day of the Safari Rally Kenya as he edged out his teammate, Ott Tanak by 0.1s.
A 4.8km duel set the scene for the Safari Kenya Rally, as the competitors faced each other in a 1-on-1 situation during the super special stage, held just outside the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.
After the opening stage, Neuville topped the timing boards with a slim lead over his teammate Ott Tanak to give the Korean manufacturer a provisional 1-2 lead at the Safari Rally.
Toyota completed the podium spots with Kalle Rovanpera within a second of Neuville’s time, followed by his Japanese teammate: Takamoto Katsuta who occupied P4.
Esapekka Lappi was the trailing Hyundai down in P5, 1.5s off the pace of Neuville. In turn, Elfyn Evans was the slowest Toyota – behind Rovanpera and Katsuta – in P6.
M-Sport Ford completed the Rally1 runners, inside the top 10, with Adrien Fourmaux seventh and Gregoire Munster in ninth. Jourdan Serderidis, competing in the Puma Rally1, occupied P14 amongst the WRC2 competitors after the first day of running.
Gus Greensmith led the WRC2 category with his eighth-place finish on the timing boards. He stood 2.8 seconds faster than his closes class rival, Oliver Solberg who rounded out the top 10, in 10th.
Friday restarts the action with a total of 127.58km of Keynan terrain for the drivers to tackle.
