Bearman jumps in for Sainz at Saudi Arabian GP after requiring surgery
8th March 2024Oliver Bearman is set to replace Carlos Sainz at Ferrari, for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, after the Spaniard was ruled out with appendicitis.
Ferrari’s outgoing Spaniard, Sainz, has been ruled out of the rest of the Formula 1 race weekend as he was diagnosed with appendicitis and ‘will require surgery.’
This has left the door open for Bearman to make his F1 debut this weekend ahead of final practice, qualifying and the race.
It was reported that Sainz was absent on Wednesday’s media day ahead of the race weekend with illness. He returned to the circuit for Thursday’s practice but he seemed far from fully fit.
Ferrari has wished ‘a speedy recovery’ for Sainz.
Bearman was already in Jeddah for the second round of the Formula 2 world championship, where he stormed to pole position for the support category’s feature race.
Following Sainz’s medical emergency, Bearman will solely focus on F1 with Free Practice 3 and Qualifying yet to be completed.
It means Bearman will not participate in F2 for the rest of the weekend.
The team have not confirmed if Sainz will be ready for the next round of the F1 championship which will be in Melbourne, Australia, in two weeks.
