Sainz fastest in FP3 as F1 heads to qualifying for the Bahrain GP

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz tops the final, and third, practice session as the sport builds up to its first qualifying session of 2024 at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Across the last two free practice sessions, we’ve had a variety of drivers at the top. Yesterday, RB’s Daniel Ricciardo topped FP1, in the morning, then Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton stood fastest in FP2, in the afternoon.
Now, Sainz has completed the Bahrain practice sessions as the third fastest driver out on track, this weekend, as the Spaniard put in a 1:30.824 lap late on in the session.
Ferrari’s outgoing Spaniard pipped Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen who finished a maximum of two-tenths behind.
Sainz’s teammate, Charles Leclerc was best-of-the-rest in fourth, ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris.
Mercedes’ George Russell led the bottom five, three-tenths off Sainz’s best time. Oscar Piastri (McLaren), Sergio Perez (Red Bull), Nico Hulkenberg (Haas) and Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) completed the top 10, respectively.
Ricciardo led the bottom half of the field, six-tenths off, in 11th ahead with teammate, Yuki Tsunoda in 13th. Hamilton, who was the first driver out on track, was sandwiched in between the two RB’s in 12th.
Kevin Magnussen found himself once more behind his teammate on the timing sheets as he completed the session in 14th, ahead of Williams’ Alexander Albon who occupied 15th.
Both Saubers completed the session down in 16th and 17th with Zhou Gunayu and Valtteri Bottas respectively.
Alpine continued to face struggles with their 2024 challenger. Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly found themselves at the bottom of the field in 18th and 20th, whilst Williams’ Logan Sargeant found himself in 19th between the two Alpines.
