F1 2023 Report Card: Red Bull in class of their own
5th December 2023Red Bull Racing have been in a league of their own, all season, as the Milton Keynes outfit dominated their way to both drivers and constructors titles.
The Milton Keynes outfit was on the verge of greatness in 2023 as their Dutch driver, Max Verstappen and its dominant RB19 nearly completed a full sweep of the 2023 season. Only Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz stopped their clean sweep of winning every single race of the season, in Singapore.
Despite being hindered by a reduction of their wind tunnel time, as a result of their cost cap breach in 2021, the team remained the class of the field. Although Red Bull’s Team Principal and CEO Christian Horner believed the team would lose around half a second per lap, they were virtually untouchable.
As a result of their dominating form across the season, it gave Red Bull an incredible win percentage across the season of 95.5% of the 23 races won. Securing 19 wins of 22, Verstappen pulled off a similar feat in the drivers with an incredible 86.4% of the races won.
2023 also became the first season where Red Bull secured their first 1-2 finish in the drivers standings. Verstappen could have taken both the drivers title and constructors title alone as the Dutchman racked up 575 points over the season whereas his teammate, Sergio Perez, finished way back on 285 points.
However, Perez came perilously close to losing second in the drivers championship against Marcedes’ Lewis Hamilton. Fortunately, Perez was able to extend the gap between himself and Hamilton as the seven-time world champion suffered DNFs in Qatar and performance issues in his W14 in the latter stages of the season.
Records were broken in F1 at the hands of the reigning and defending world champions. An old record was broken after Red Bull secured their 12th consecutive win at Hungary, which beat McLaren’s previous best of 11 in 1988. The team went on to build on this up to 15 before their first defeat in Singapore.
Verstappen managed to break two different records during his cruise to championship glory. The dominant Dutch world champion went on to secure 10 consecutive race victories which beat the record of nine, previously set by Sebastian Vettel in 2013 – in a Red Bull.
The reigning world champion also reset the clock on most race wins in a single season as he topped the season with 19 wins, beating his previous best of 15 set in 2022.
Despite the many positives of their season, the team was not without controversy this year. The team’s advisor, Dr. Helmut Marko was in hot water with fans and the media after he made discriminatory comments about Perez’s ethnicity being a result of his lack of form.
Red Bull was slow to condemn the comments with Horner reportedly saying the advisor was not part of the F1 team, but the wider Red Bull company. The FIA did not share the same vision as they slapped Marko with a formal warning.
