Mercedes’ seven-time world champion, Sir Lewis Hamilton, is happy the team secured second place in the constructors standings but emphasises the team need to dig deep over the winter.

It was yet another winless season for the seven-time world champion as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen but in a dominating performance all season to secure 19 of 23 race wins. Only Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Perez, and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz stopped the triple world champion from securing a clean sweep.

Despite this, Hamilton has taken a small victory away from the 2023 season as the team took home the runner-up spot in the Constructors standings having beaten Ferrari by three points, at the final race of the season. Hamilton said:

“I’m happy for the team that we’ve managed to secure P2 in the Constructor’s Championship, it was a great effort by the team at the track and both in Brackley and Brixworth.

“I hope everyone at the factory is happy with the result today and I’m grateful for all the hard work the team has put into this season, it’s been a long and tough year for us.”

Although the team initially continued with their zero-pod concept at the beginning of the year, people were expectant that Mercedes’ fortunes would shift when the traditional side-pods returned. However, it was not to be.

Mercedes have not been in their best form since the ground-affect era of cars were introduced in 2022, having only won one race over the course of the previous seasons at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

Hamilton has stated the team needs to ‘dig deep’ over the winter in their ambition to return to winning ways. He said:

“We’re not where we want to be yet, we want to be competing for the championship and race wins and this weekend showed that we need to dig deep and work hard during the winter to get back to where we want to be and come back stronger next year.”

2023 joins Hamilton’s list as being the second consecutive season, after 2022, where the seven-time world champion has failed to add to his 103 career wins. Previously Hamilton managed to secure a win in every season he competed in.
