Scary scenes as grandstand roof rips off after Brazil GP storm

Scary scenes at Interlagos where grandstand roofs were ripped off during extreme weather, after qualifying for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, as a thunderous storm rolled through the region.

Qualifying for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix was a mixed bag in terms of the weather. The session was had a 60% chance of rain at the start of Q1 which later revealed to be correct as qualifying transitioned from dry to soaked.

Q1 and Q2 remained dry, but Q3 saw the grey clouds transition into dark, threatening clouds. It allowed the top 10 drivers a single run to claim pole position, later secured by the triple world champion of Max Verstappen, Red Bull.

Due to the change in weather conditions, the session was red-flagged as the rain poured, quickly followed by thunder and lightning. The session ended prematurely as a result.

Videos and images quickly charged through social media about the extreme weather conditions.

A video from inside a grandstand, at turn four, showed spectators who had to battle with gusty winds before a section of the roof ripped itself from its structure. In another video, the second turn four grandstand – parallel to the track – also lost its roof after its neighbouring grandstand lost theirs.

Images quickly circulated online where a grandstand roof, at the final corner, collapsed on itself.

It is unclear how many grandstands were affected by the storm but, at the time of writing, there have not been any reported injuries as a result of the damage.
