Verstappen breaks own record with 16th win this season at Mexico GP
29th October 2023Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has broken his own record, for most wins in a single season, as he secured his 16th win of the year at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
Verstappen has raised the benchmark, as his standard has done all season long, as the dominant F1 driver increased the record for most race wins in a single season. The triple world champion had reset the record last year with 15 race wins in a season but he has bolstered this to 16, this season, in Mexico.
Despite this it was not all plain sailing for the reigning world champion.
After a tricky qualifying session, the Dutchman started the Mexican race in third place behind both Ferraris who locked out the front row. When the lights went out, as both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz punched a hole down the main straight, Verstappen made a move for the lead into turn one.
From there the Dutchman managed the gap between himself and Leclerc, as his teammate retired at the end of the first lap with contact against Leclerc in the opening corner.
Verstappen was tested once more after Haas’ Kevin Magnussen crashed out heavily at turn eight. The Dane’s car was a wreck after the crash which spurred on the safety car. Red Bull pulled Verstappen into the pit lane for a fresh set of hard tyres but when the Dutchman returned to the circuit, the race was soon red-flagged.
Thankfully for Verstappen, the pit stop did not cost him track position.
Race Control opted for yet another standing start, this time with Verstappen on pole. As the lights went out, the sole Red Bull driver punched a hole for the rest of the field down the pit straight but as the rest of the pack fought over track position, it allowed the triple world champion to retain the lead into the opening corner.
Again, Verstappen was able to continue on in free air to manage his pace to those behind and cruise his way to yet another win. By the chequered flag, the #1 Red Bull had secured the win with 13 seconds in hand over Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Leclerc, in second and third respectively.
This win marks a trio of wins at Mexico City which spans from his first championship-winning campaign in 2021 to now.
